China Urges US, Iran to Honor Ceasefire

(MENAFN) China issued an urgent appeal on Wednesday, calling on both Washington and Tehran to uphold their ceasefire commitments and step back from the brink of renewed full-scale conflict.

"China is deeply concerned over the current situation," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told reporters in Beijing.

The statement landed hours after the US disclosed it had carried out fresh strikes on Qeshm Island in "response to attempted attacks by Iran across the Middle East," and confirmed that US forces alongside partner militaries had intercepted multiple Iranian missiles and drones.

Kuwait also reported that its air defense systems had been activated in the early hours of Wednesday to counter what it described as "hostile" missile and drone attacks targeting its territory.

Mao pulled no punches in her assessment of the trajectory, warning that the "renewed warfare serves no one's interest."

"We hope relevant parties can cherish the opportunities of peace, honor ceasefire commitment and keep momentum of negotiation, stick to dispute settlement through political and diplomatic means, and realize a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire at an early date and create necessary conditions for the restoration of peace and tranquility in the Middle East," she added.

The exchange of strikes marks a dangerous new rupture in a conflict that has simmered since US and Israeli forces launched a war against Iran on Feb. 28 — with a ceasefire having nominally been in place since April 8.
