Insight Editions Unveils Naga Archives, a New Imprint Devoted to Art, Esoterica, and the Curiosities of the Imagination

Launching with Brandon Hodge's Supernatural Machines, Naga Archives explores the strange, hidden, and forgotten through lavishly illustrated books.

Conceived as a modern cabinet of curiosities in book form, Naga Archives will bring together artists, writers, historians, collectors, and unconventional scholars to explore subjects traditionally overlooked or dismissed by mainstream culture. The publishing program will encompass supernatural technologies, mythical creatures, ritual objects, death and mortality, occult iconography, forgotten belief systems, and humanity’s enduring attempts to give visible form to the invisible.

The imprint takes its name from the Naga, the ancient serpentine figure associated across Asian mythologies with transformation, hidden knowledge, and the guardianship of treasures. For Naga Archives, the name represents its broader mission: to preserve and illuminate that which has been obscured, forbidden, misunderstood, or simply too unusual to fit within conventional categories.

Rather than treating the occult, the monstrous, and the macabre as curiosities on the fringes of culture, Naga Archives will examine them as enduring expressions of the human imagination. Across centuries and civilizations, monsters have given form to fear and desire; ritual objects have attempted to bridge material and immaterial worlds; and representations of death and the body have reflected changing ideas about mortality, belief, and what it means to be human.

Each Naga Archives title will be conceived as an artifact in its own right, combining meticulous research with immersive visual design to reward both sustained reading and serendipitous discovery.

THE INAUGURAL VOLUME: SUPERNATURAL MACHINES

The inaugural publication from Naga Archives will be Brandon Hodge’s Supernatural Machines: The History of Spirit Communication Devices, a sweeping visual history of the instruments invented to bridge the divide between the living and the dead.

From the nineteenth-century séances of the Fox Sisters to the rise of the Ouija board, Hodge traces two centuries of spiritual experimentation and mechanical ingenuity. Writing planchettes, talking boards, spirit trumpets, mechanical mediums, and other extraordinary devices reveal an era in which scientific ambition, technological invention, and spiritual longing became deeply intertwined.

Featuring original photography, archival ephemera, period illustrations, and extensive historical research, the 432-page volume uncovers a largely forgotten history of technological mysticism. Supernatural Machines will be published on October 27, 2026.

Supernatural Machines establishes the tone for an expanding publishing program moving freely between art history, anatomy, folklore, supernatural belief, and cultural history. Forthcoming titles include:

Monstrum: A Visual History of Mythical Beasts by Ed Simon — A richly illustrated exploration of monsters across art, mythology, and visual culture, examining how imaginary creatures have reflected evolving ideas of fear, power, difference, transformation, and the boundaries of the human.

A new volume by Nicole Angemi — A provocative exploration of death, anatomy, autopsy, and postmortem investigation through Angemi’s distinctive approach to the human body and the visual culture surrounding mortality.

Additional projects in development will explore occult art, visionary creators, supernatural phenomena, anatomical curiosities, ritual practices, and forgotten histories.
